Patti Ackley, RN
Hospice Nurse Honored by Colorado Nurses Association

Patti Ackley, an RN with Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado, was recently honored with the Clinical Care Award from the Colorado Nurses Association. This award recognizes nurses who demonstrate involvement beyond nursing and show a willingness to mentor fellow nurses, while promoting professional development. Ackley, who cares for patients at the new Hospice Care Center in Grand Junction, has more than 28 years of nursing experience and has been with Hospice & Palliative Care for three years. Ackley is also certified in hospice and palliative care.

2008 Outstanding Achievement Award

Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado was recently honored with the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award presented by the Colorado Center for Hospice & Palliative Care.

The annual award was created to honor a Colorado hospice and/or palliative care program that has made extraordinary achievements in demonstrating excellence in end-of-life care.  HPCWC was recognized for its proactive community outreach.

Cordt Kassner, CO Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, and Terri Walter, Senior VP of Quality/Regional Programs, accept the award on behalf of Hospice.

Historic Preservation Award

On May 5, 2008, Hospice received the Historic Preservation Award from the City of Grand Junction.  This award was presented for the rehabilitation and ongoing stewardship of the Historic Miller Homestead located at 3090 North 12th Street.  Due to the efforts on behalf of Hospice, the home will enjoy an extended life in the community and serve as a focal point and landmark within the Hospice campus.

Christy Whitney receives Prestigious
Livingston Fellowship Award


On May 2, 2008, Christy was presented with the Prestigious Livingston Fellowship Award from the Bonfils-Stanton Foundation in Denver, CO.  The Livingston Fellowships, each providing up to $25,000, are intended to give promising leaders in the nonprofit sector the opportunity for advanced study, research and professional development.

The Bonfils-Stanton Foundation is a private, nonprofit corporation created to enhance the quality of life for residents of Colorado.  The mission of the Foundation is to advance excellence in the areas of Arts and Culture, Community Service, and Science and Medicine through strategic investments resulting in significant and unique contributions in these fields and across the nonprofit sector.

Christy plans to further develop her leadership skills and management expertise by visiting the United Kingdom to study best practices and learn from thought leaders.  She will also participate in an executive leadership training program and will complete a writing project as a synthesis of managment and leadership concepts for middle managers.

 
 
 
Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado has also become well-known for its innovations in end of life care directed at meeting the needs of rural areas of the state. We are a community-based organization, therefore governed by a Board of Directors and President/CEO, Christy Whitney, RN, MS, CNAA. We have received significant recognition for our work, including:

• 2004 American Hospital Association’s Circle of Life Award Citation of Honor

• 2002 Recipient of the Best Year’s Beacon “Favorite Non-profit” Award

• 2000 Recipient of the Joel A. H. Webb Award for Health Care-Large from the El Pomar Foundation “Awards for Excellence” Program

• 2000 Recipient of the Colorado Trust Palliative Care Initiative Grant that will provide funds for three-year project to expand palliative care and create a palliative care network

• 2000 Recipient of the Colorado Hospice Organization’s Innovation Award for our thrift shop, Heirlooms for Hospice

• 1997 Received a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Faith in Action grant for the volunteer program and for developing a community-based adult grief group

• 1996 Recognized by Colorado Hospice Organization as the Program of the Year
